This workshop includes information on how to set the paradigm for purity and courtship beginning in preschool. We will also discuss media discernment, how to give "the talk", and how parents can begin now to open up the lines of communication with their children to pave the way for honesty and openness during adolescence.

Mad? Angry? Ticked off? or just frustrated? What ever you call it, it will drive your kids away, divide your marriage, and destroy your home. No one likes living next to a volcano that could erupt at any moment. What are the dangers, the signs, and some Biblical solutions? How does one deal with an angry person and how do I get rid of these feelings that scream at me?

"Why isn't this child learning as well as my other children? The other kids all learned to read using this curriculum, what am I doing wrong?" When a child seems bright but is not learning at the same rate as his/her peers a learning disability could be the reason. This session will explain the symptoms of a learning disability and how to determine when this is the problem. Teaching methods, curriculum selection and specialized tutoring will also be discussed.

Marilyn Boyer has taught all fourteen of her children at home, so she has plenty of experience with any age group you can name. But her very favorite age to teach is those eager, curious, exciting, challenging munchkins we call preschoolers. This, Marilyn says is the time when we lay the foundation for greatness by pouring love and acceptance all over them, instead of treating them like a nuisance. Preschoolers aren't just little interruptions to be kept "occupied" while older siblings study. This season in a child's life is the time to tap into his huge potential by maximizing his natural love for learning and helping him to see that God is preparing him for a lifetime of important service. Come and learn from Marilyn how to make the most of this brief but exciting time.

Juxtaposition, metaphor, symbolism, irony, foreshadowing - HELP! Parents often avoid the subject of literature because of the intimidating vocabulary of literary analysis. The truth is, you don't need a college degree in literature to understand this vocabulary; what you need is a well written children's story. Adam takes the audience on a guided tour of literary devices, making discerning literary analysts out of each and every audience member. Doing the same with your own children couldn't be easier, but beware: soon, they will be finding onomatopoeia everywhere they look.

In this workshop we will discuss not only the basics, but the BASIS, of a good marriage. Beginning in the second chapter of Genesis through the book of Revelation, marriage is a central focus in Scripture. God even uses the marriage relationship to explain to the church and the world the relationship between Christ and His church. We will establish a biblical vision for marriage, consider the roles of husbands and wives, discuss the unique pressures that homeschooling places on the marriage, and point out ways that we can divorce-proof our homes. The world is watching as the daily drama of our family lives play out before them. Let's make sure that our marriages and families point them to Christ.

Culture is the practical outworking of our belief about origins. In what way does a culture's view of origins affect manners, education, social institutions, science, and morality?

Once decisions have been made about what to require for high school graduation, once the overall plan has been set, there is still much to do. How do you set up each course? Courses can be designed or modified by using prepackaged curricula, by using a variety of materials you already have on hand, or by outlining the course and finding materials to fit your needs. We will discuss these methods of course planning, and will also cover grading, keeping track of assignments with no stress, and record keeping.

Every man is a hero and it starts with a dream and a commitment.

Is your daughter the "odd girl out" or the "leader of the pack"? The rise and fall of the hierarchies of our daughters, and their siblings and friends, is like the rise and fall of kingdoms and world powers. How do we as parents deal with the cliques and their fall out? What is a Godly pattern for our girls and how should they structure their relationships? How do the lies of our culture perpetuate the need for our daughters to bolster their self image and define themselves through the eyes of their peers? Come and hear about God's design for our daughters and their relationships. Step off the treadmill of our culture's say so and into the Spirit of God as the architect of relationships-even those of girls.

Sons and daughters are very different to raise and have very different roles to train and target. Raising godly children is strategic. Many young men feel unequipped to face the challenges set before them as a future husband, father, and provider. Daughters also often feel unsure of what it takes to be an effective wife and mother. In this session, 10 trainable qualities will be discussed that young men and women will need to be successful after they leave your nest.

A Personally Developed Plan (PDP) is required by Oregon Law when a home school student fails to score above the 14th percentile on a nationally normed achievement test. This session will explain how the PDP is cooperatively written by an academic advisor and the parents, and the ways in which the plan identifies, addresses, and measures student progress.

If you sometimes feel like homeschooling is drudgery, you can bet your kids feel the same way! It's such a temptation to stress over teaching predicate nominatives or the steps of division that we forget to delight in our children and make time to enjoy being with them. In this session, Marilyn shares how she and Rick have found this to actually be the key to instilling values that stick and building in them a heart for things of the Lord.

In an engaging presentation that is as much class discussion as lecture, Adam involves the audience in a lively debate on the definition of the classic. In the process, listeners are encouraged to consider the moral and ethical nature of reading, and invited to suggest candidates for a "class list" of all-time great books. This presentation teaches three important tests to apply to any book in order to determine whether it is worthy - and suggests some reasons why you should even care. So, which books belong on your student's reading list? Come listen and find out!

Is your homeschool day made up of demanding toddlers and emotional teens, six subjects to prepare for each child, co-op demands, music, sports, falling behind, tears, chores, skipping chapters...ultimately the question, "Where is God in all this?" Learn to work together as a family to achieve attainable goals with a fresh outlook and easy-to-implement organizational ideas. Bring sanity and success back to your home, and enjoy the process. Your homeschool chaos can come to an end!

The statistics are tragic and startling. Great percentages of children raised in evangelical homes are not continuing in their faith and beliefs as they reach and continue into adulthood. Some of the most important academic and practical training we can give our children as we homeschool them is worldview training. For Christians, our goal is to teach our children to think biblically about all of life. During the course of this workshop, we will delve into why Christian worldview training is an absolutely crucial component of our homeschooling. We will also discuss the following questions: · What is worldview? · What function does worldview serve in my child's life? · How can I teach worldview? · How can I teach worldview if I don't understand it? · At what age should I teach worldview to my children? · Can I award high school credit for studying worldview? If we want to see true revival in our culture, we must teach our children how to think biblically about all of life-from academics to social issues to daily decisions. A true biblical worldview will equip our children to become powerful thinkers, leaders, and communicators. This workshop will change the way you teach!

Selecting curriculum for the upper grades can become a real nightmare. On the one hand, many materials seem designed for a classroom setting with expensive equipment required, and on the other hand, home-school-designed materials vary so widely in ability level (for both students and teachers) that it is hard to know what will work. Parents often wonder if they need an advanced degree to teach advanced courses, or if "throwing money" at a difficult subject will help, or if materials they like are too basic to count for high school. In this session, we will focus on resources for a variety of subjects that almost any family can use, and will discuss ways to evaluate the myriad of texts and programs available.

The commitment to train is the foundation of victory. Learn about two people every man needs in this battle.

American higher education has become unfriendly territory for Christians and other conservatives in many ways. Many parents wonder whether they should consider sending their students to college at all. Drawing from extensive experience in higher education, Adam offers invaluable advice on this all important question, suggesting ways to make the considerable benefits of a college education available to your homeschool graduates. You'll learn valuable tips for deciding what kind of school to choose, and for avoiding the pitfalls that await the unsuspecting freshman. A must for every parent of high schoolers.

Our children are precious gifts from the Lord but sometimes they can interfere with our human plans. Many homeschooling parents are in distress because they find their little ones seeking attention at all the wrong times. As the father of six children, David Hazell, along with his wife, Marie, have found creative ways to prepare these young "sponges" for school while keeping them creatively occupied at times when the parent needs to concentrate on the older ones. The workshop is full of practical suggestions for educational toys and common household items that can be used to educate and occupy young ones. Homeschooling with young ones can be easier than you think!

There are plenty of misconceptions about the role of the father in a home schooling family. Some people think that if he can't be at home during "school time" he can't be involved. Others think his job is to take over some of Mom's chores in order to free her to spend more time with the children. But Scripture gives seven functions of a father in a godly home, and each of these can be applied very practically and powerfully in home education. Enjoy the wisdom and humor of this presentation as Rick answers the question of "What's A Dad to Do?"

The phone rings. "Hello." "Is this Jennifer Bliesner?" "Yes." "I was told that you could help me with home schooling." "I'd be happy to, when are you planning on starting?" "I pulled them out of school today." More and more this is how the conversation starts. If you need the nuts and bolts of how to start home schooling after public school this is the session for you. Married 38 years and a mother of eight, Jennifer Bliesner currently tutors home school students and mentors home schooling families.

Entropy is true, even with regards to Parental Rights (PR). The "From Order to Disorder" of PR over the last 200 years has suffered from destructive energy and the threatening U.N Treaty "Convention on the Rights of the Child" looms to destroy Parental Rights as God has intended them. We must exercise the stewardship God has granted us and through constructive energy, like support of the Parental Rights Amendment, to rebuild the pillar of Parental Rights in our society. There will be plenty of time for Q & A.

What is your current role in your family's homeschool? Believe it or not, busy dads can be involved in school too. There are simple things you can do to connect with your children and help de-pressurize your wife's already overloaded day. David introduces interesting, easy, and time effective ways for dads to become active parts in the homeschooling process, without interfering in the work day. Leading devotions, instituting a "Mom's Day Off," guiding the slimy science experiments, reading books aloud, and going to the library, are just a few of the things David will introduce. Homeschooling is hectic but in the truest sense it is eternal discipleship. Learn to stand with your wife side-by-side and watch her sparkle..

Do you ever have those moments of panic when you wonder if you are giving your children everything they need to succeed in life? Or, in those rare quiet moments of thought and reflection, do you worry that you are inadequate for all that homeschooling requires of you? Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night plagued by the long list of important things that still need to be done-and know there will never be enough time in the day to accomplish them? If you, like I, have experienced these feelings and fears in your homeschooling journey, then come to this workshop and be encouraged. God knows that as human beings we are confined and surrounded by limitations and weaknesses. We will look specifically at the challenging areas of vision, finances, knowledge, home management, and fatigue. The Scripture provides promises of hope, strength, power, and help for those of us who are weak, weary, and imperfect. The Bible also instructs us in accomplishing the impossible as we bask in God's boundless resources, amazing strength, and infinite love.

For Such a Time as This

Presented by: Oregon Christian Home Education Association Network

As author of The Second Mayflower (just released in its 3rd edition), Kevin Swanson speaks from the heart on the beautiful vision that formed America. No other nation on earth has been so blessed with liberty and prosperity as America. In this rousing and inspiring presentation, Kevin urges home educators to study America's godly heritage, be grateful for it, and to live the principles that beat in the heart of the founders of the nation. Has the vision faded, and have the blessings departed? How is God going to use the home school movement to revive this blessing? God may very well be preparing to use homeschooling in a powerful way to transform our families and our nation.

In this address, Mike contrasts godly wisdom (which Christians should be trying to follow) and worldly wisdom (wisdom from below) as it relates to specific issues that we all deal with in the homeschool community. He explains that there are two conflicting worldviews or belief systems today, orthodoxy and progressivism. Orthodoxy is committed to an external, definable and transcendent authority for truth. This truth comes from God and is given to us primarily through His Word, the Bible. In contrast, progressivism asserts that moral authority is to be defined by the spirit of the modern age, a spirit of rationalism and subjectivism. Truth tends to be viewed as a process, as a reality and is ever unfolding depending upon the circumstances. He will explain how certain important U.S. Supreme Court decisions have been affected by this new progressive thinking. Mike will then break down how these two differing views are affecting education and specifically, the freedom to home educate. The good news is that truth sets one free. The good news is we know the truth, we simply have to live and battle for the truth. Homeschoolers have demonstrated their willingness to do so, hence our hope for the future.

Topics: Encouragement

Parental rights and religious freedom have been the two foundations to establish a constitutional right for parents to teach their children at home. The U.S. Supreme Court some years back weakened the free exercise of religion claim as a foundation for homeschooling so that in order for homeschoolers to claim a fundamental right to homeschool, they must be able to combine the free exercise right with the parental rights claim. In other words, both rights have to co-exist. Currently, this is not a problem, but because of the fragile nature of freedom, moral decay, complacency and apathy, homeschooling freedoms are in jeopardy. Additionally, since the parental rights foundational claim is an "implicit" right, not an "explicit" right (meaning parental rights is not specifically spelled out in the Constitution) parental rights as we know it today is teetering and could be in trouble in the future. Mike will explain why parental rights are under attack and provide a solution on how we can maintain the current freedoms we have to teach our children at home.

What is the heart of homeschooling? What is it that really makes it work? This is an important question in that there is a distinct possibility that the homeschooling ethos may disappear into the burgeoning list of educational choices, especially with the rise of government-funded school at home. In this presentation, Kevin presents a passionate case for preserving the heart of homeschooling, those elements that have contributed to its beauty and success - the heart of Christ, the hand of the parent, and the blessings of freedom.

Almost every father has heard that he is to lead his family spiritually, physically, and in every other way. However, many fathers will tell you that no one has ever told them how to effectively lead their children, especially in the area of spiritual development. Michael Smith presents encouraging and practical tips to fathers for becoming a helpful participant in the home education program and a leader in the home. He provides insight on the mental and emotional benefits to mothers and children fathers can provide through specific activities, and offers suggestions to men on being more effective as husbands. Mike candidly shares his many failures and a few successes. The session concludes with a list of the six things homeschooling mothers have identified as the primary ways their husbands can be more effective in the family's homeschool program.

As homeschooling parents looking at the possibility or seemingly impossibility of college, it can sometimes be overwhelming. What tests should be taken and where are they given? When should applications be sent in? How am I going to afford this expenditure? What college(s) should we consider? Why should they attend one college over another? These and many other questions will not only enter your mind but if you actually begin applying to colleges you will find yourself inundated with literature, phone calls, and terminology you are not familiar with. This breakout is designed to give you some Biblical and practical guidelines to answer these questions; help you understand the process most colleges/universities use to review applications and accept applicants; as well as what you can expect from admissions, financial aid, and student service departments at college. Handouts will be provided and there will be a time for questions during and after the breakout session.

Our energy and time is spent juggling all the parts of daily life making our relationship with each other one of the last things on our "to do" list. Because we wear different hats, sometimes we forget that we're on the same team when our secondary objectives conflict. So how do we keep it all together and have a good marriage in the process? Here we discuss what we've learned so far, and suggest some practices to remain properly aligned with each other and with God who lights our path.

Homeschooling is the most powerful form of education rediscovered in the modern age. Its power and success is unquestioned. Yet for most home educators, the principles that worked in home education are not transferred into post-secondary education. Cutting edge visionaries are bringing a Copernican revolution to the method of higher education in the form of mentorship. If our movement takes this next step, we will make far greater impact on the way we do post-secondary education and economics, then we have seen in K-12 education. Based on years of experience with mentoring, Kevin Swanson presents a vision for mentorship applied to both the college and entrepreneurial tracks.

The early years before children begin formal education is the time to show them that learning is fun and interesting. Elizabeth will present informal reading and math "lessons" that not only teach, but help transition mom into their first teacher. Raising motivated children starts with the parents. How are you as a parent motivated? How will you model that for your children? But one must step back even further to ask, why are you home schooling? When having that answer clear in your mind, you as a parent-teacher then have a source for your own motivation. Spreading that to your children then becomes easier. As they catch your vision they also will be more motivated. Obedience is another key issue of motivation. Come and discover the many aspects of motivation in this talk which will help you deal with, " Mom, I don't want to do my math today, or ever again."

“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” One only has to listen to find the heart of a child. Once found, it is essential that we don't begin to control, pressure, or manipulate in order to change behavior. Changed behavior must be the result of a changed heart. Anything less leads only to hypocrisy, rebellion. Too often parents depend on rules as the primary enforcer of behavior. Rules can change behavior, but they can't change the heart. When parents begin to see the difference between character flaws and disobedience, applying less pressure and more gentle understanding, children will be more willing to admit fault and seek help from those they love. Children need to hear the beating of our hearts rather than the beating of our voices. Parents will want to join Mark as he relates his experience as a shepherd and the important lesson that you don't become a shepherd just because you own sheep.

Josiah became King when he was eight years old. Do we believe God made a mistake, or do we believe God calls and uses even the young for his glory? If we believe the latter, then we must reject the modern concept of adolescence and raise our sons and daughters to live and serve as men and women during their teen years as opposed to sitting on the sidelines and extending their childhood.

When I first began to research the topic of laziness, I found that there was very little work available and less than a handful of books on the subject. It was then that I found a treasury of information recorded over 4000 years ago, along with a fascinating thesis on this subject written in the 1600s. In this seminar, we will explore the four root causes of laziness, and the time-tested remedies that have changed many a lazy child and demanding parent. A slothful person, according to Solomon, “will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing." But “show me a man diligent in his work and he shall stand before kings!” (Proverbs 22)

Jan will give suggestions of authors for all ages of boys, from those early "reading is too hard" days to "I hardly have time to read anymore" years.

One of the major differences between struggling students and super learners is their ability to process information. If your child struggles with attention span, directions, phonics, letter, number, or word recognition, comprehension, composition, social skills, language, visual attending, word problems, or thinking skills, he or she may have a processing challenge. The good news is that processing ability can be developed to greater levels. In this session you will learn how to test and enhance your child’s processing ability. Come to be encouraged by the possibilities to change your child life.

Why do we start for the kitchen to get a drink for a child, get sidetracked by a paperclip on the floor and end up weeding in the garden with no idea why our child is still thirsty? Why do library books constantly disappear into black holes in our homes, never to be seen again?...at least not before the fines add up? Why do we have 25 projects started in our day and only 2 or 3 are ever finished? As a self-proclaimed "Gloriously Unregimented Mom", Carol shares stories and strategies from the heart (and from the trenches!) about a home run by a highly distractible mom. She brings to light the many "truths" distractible moms must own if ever they are to develop strategies that work. Best of all, Carol shares her firm conviction that the highly distractible mom has a real and God-given edge over the naturally organized mom. Come and learn and laugh as you find REAL help for the highly distractible mom.

Based on the Greek understanding of Ephesians 6:4 and Colossians 3:21, Mark will paint and unforgettable picture for parents who are unknowingly quenching the spirit of their children. Children who are fully loved, fully known, without any fear of rejection, will become children who possess a low level of fear and a high level of risk and reasoning. Children who develop a high level of risk and reasoning, are children who see failure as stepping stones for success. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Success is failure upon failure, with great enthusiasm!” You will not want to miss this session of great enthusiasm, instruction, and inspiration!

There’s a spiritual depth and hunger that reaches beyond the maintenance mode of cultural Christianity. A mission-minded family emphasizes leadership, calling, and destiny. There’s a prevailing attitude of self-sacrifice and an emphasis on total submission to God’s will. And there’s an unmistakable and contagious joy. This workshop suggests practical ways to incorporate a heart for God’s Great Commission into our everyday homeschooling life.

Many evangelical churches today are crying out for more men to take leadership. But at the same time, they often require advanced degrees in seminary or Bible College. Is that biblical? How can a local church raise up men to lead without having to send them off for academic training. The answer is found in the basic principles of the home schooling movement. Those who walk with the wise will become wise. Ordinary (i.e. regular) men can become more than adequate for service as Elders and Deacons in Christ's church by being "home schooled by the church" in preparation for the ministry. Steve Rouse is a Teaching Elder for Household of Faith Community Church, a local church that fills five pulpits every Sunday with a roster of over 20 competent preachers and Bible teachers from its five neighborhood congregations

The home is the easiest and most natural place to disciple our children. But the job is not an easy one and the responsibility falls on fathers. Sometimes it is daunting because we have never done it before. Sometimes it seems impossible because we don’t understand it. Sometimes it isn’t getting done because “I let my wife handle those things.” We’ll talk about the necessity of discipleship and some of the ways dads can tackle this project to the glory of God.

Applicable to “normal”, “gifted” and “struggling” students, the information in this session may help you discover underlying causes of troublesome symptoms and give you some ideas that may help your children.
